What does a Boilermaker do?
Boilermakers don’t just work with boilers - this trade offers incredible variety.
As a Boilermaker you’ll work with heavy structural steel to fabricate, assemble, install and repair boilers, tanks, and a wide variety of other fabricated metal products.
You’ll also work across a range of industries, including construction, oil and gas, power generation and shipbuilding. This is a fulfilling career with endless opportunities for growth, skill development, and job satisfaction.

What will you learn as an apprentice?
An apprenticeship in Boilermaking teaches you how to develop specialised Boilermaking skills, such as making and fixing boilers and pressurised storage tanks. Under the supervision of qualified tradespeople, you will also learn how to:
- Interpret technical drawings
- Handle and work with a variety of metal parts and components;
- Using basic power tools to perform cutting, drilling, welding, bending and punching of metals
- Performing hand tool work including sanding, grinding, cutting and polishing
- Align and fit components
- Complete structural welding to standard
- Work according to safe work practices
It generally takes four years to become a qualified Boilermaker, but since the apprenticeship is based on competency, it can be completed earlier if you have achieved the required skills.

Where can your apprenticeship lead you?
There are many career pathways and options open to you once you complete your apprenticeship.
When undertaking a Boilermaker apprenticeship you will study a Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade over four years.
You might want to gain further qualifications in your chosen field, or even undertake another trade.
Either way, an apprenticeship as a Boilermaker is your ticket to a bright future.
Career Pathway
During your apprenticeship with MEGT you will work towards attaining the Certificate III in Engineering - Fabrication Trade, upon completion of which you will be qualified to work as an Boilermaker.
There are options to upskill with further study, which will enable you to pursue a variety of more advanced occupations within the trade once you obtain the necessary qualifications for a specific role;

*Certificate II refers to a nationally recognised qualification that prepares you for the workplace or academic studies. While it’s not required it may help you to prepare for a Certificate III.
